Playing cards and chess

Assalaam-u-alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

There are 2 issues that have recently been bugging me and I would just like to find out whether playing card games like thunnie amongst friends is allowed in Islam and if not what is the ruling about it?

Also is chess allowed in Islam? If not what is the ruling?

Both chess and cards are makrooh-ut-tahreemi (prohibit) and will be Haraam (forbidden) if gambling or negligence of any Islamic duty is the result.
