As Salaamu Alaykum
Can Mufti saheb please explain if Amber Bead necklaces are permissible for infants to wear when teething.
It is claimed to work in the following manner:
“we believe that the power within amber to soothe pain lies in the fact that it creates an electromagnetic field which enhances the human frame of mind.”
“Amber is associated with sunlight and warmth and is reputed to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and accelerate the healing of wounds and is thus the perfect help for babies and toddlers who wear it when they are teething.
When a baby is wearing a teething necklace on the skin, the skin’s warmth releases healing oils from the amber (a resin) which are absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream. “

Dear Sister in Islam,
Your email below refers.
In principle, it is possible that Allah Taála has kept cure or treatment within certain natural elements in this world. These are means, and real cure is from Allah Taála.
We also note that there is no religious or belief-system significance attached to such beads. If there was, it would not be permissible to use such beads.
Regarding Amber in particular, we do not have any reliable information regarding its medicinal properties. What is of concern is that there are many reports that this amber treatment is a hoax.
So if an expert in alternative medicine is convinced that it is beneficial, it will be permissible. On the other hand, if it is a gimmick, then obviously there is no benefit in using such beads.
Also, one should take proper care that the string of beads does not break, thereby endangering the infant who may swallow the beads.
And Allah Taäla knows best.
