السَّــــلاَمُ عَــــلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُ
Some people before they pass away, they say certain things and change a lot of their ways etc? I know no one knows when they going to pass away, and the saying that 40 days before they pass away they know is false .. Please explain.
Answer
Assalaamu alaykum
When it is said that no one knows when they will pass away, this refers to sure knowledge or certainty.
However, it is possible to have an inclination, a premonition or an apprehension that one is close to one's earthly life. This often happens, and it not a sign of piety or righteousness. It is merely one of the features that Allah Ta'ala grants to some.
It can then be used in a positive manner, as in the case of the pious, or it is used in a negative manner, as in the case of the sinful who engage in more pleasure out of despondency for life.
In the Ahaadith we are taught to seek protection from sudden death. Therefore a Mu'min should ask Allah Ta'ala for this favour of having some idea that his death is close so that he can make better preparation for it. However, a Mu'min should not place reliance on such a premonition, but should at all times be prepared for death.
And Allah Ta'ala knows best
