Insurance and Medical Aid

Insurance and Medical Aid

Assalaamu allaykum

Duas mufti saheb is well.

I have 2 questions.

1. With the current state of south african hospitals is medical aid allowed. Or minimum hospital plan. With the grace of Allah i have no medical issues. The question arises due to the fact in an emergency what does one do if one can not afford private hospital fees.

2. By the will of Allah my vehicle was stolen in December. I do not believe in insurance.
So currently im starting to save for a new vehicle and inshAllah i will obtain the funds to purchase a new 1.
My question is with regard to insurance as my parents and many other elders in the family and friends are advising that due to to the rise in theft and hijackings i should insure and that there is a leeway due to the country we live in.

Please advise accordingly.

Shukran

Your email below refers.
  1. Medical Aid is a form of insurance. Hence it is ordinarily impermissible. Only if there is a genuine and dire need will it be permissible, as an exception to the general rule, similar to it being permissible to eat pork at the time of dire need. In the case of an emergency one can use the state hospitals, although we acknowledge that their service is not on par with private hospitals. Instead of contribting towards Medical Aid, take that amount and invest it in some Halaal avenue which is also accessable at the time of emergencies.
  1. May Allah Ta’ala grant you something better in place of your lost vehicle.
No, it is not permissible to insure one’s vehicle, even in the present climate.
Similar to above, put aside the amount one would have contributed towards insurance into a Halaal investment, which one can withdraw at the time of need.
There are no perfect solutions in life. As Muslims, we should adopt the best option available within parameters of the Shariah and leave the rest to Allah Ta’ala. This is a world of test and tribulations, and we are being coaxed and tempted to cross the line. Therein lies our struggle, for which we will be rewarded.
And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
