Paying with clothes

Assalaamu alaykum

It is permissible. One should value it at the normal price such old clothes will fetch in the open market.

However, one should serious check one’s intention. It should never be that at the time of giving, we give that which we ourselves will not want to receive, but when it is the time to receive the bounties of Allah Ta’ala, then we expect the best. Zakaat is an ibaadah, and not a burden that needs to be discharged with leftovers.
