Sadaqa on House?

Slm, would like to find out, we have just finished renovations and an elder in our family states that we must take out sadaqa on the house, which I am uncertain of, as he states we need to slaughter a sheep on the house. I have not heard of such a thing, and will not do something that is not accepted. Please can you help, is there such a thing?
